This would make the Rusalki the firewall and antivirus keeping the contents of the simulations from infecting the larger computer system. Operating on these assumptions the whole thing is an attempt at a trace route back to the master computer running all of this, more or less to attain godhood within the simulation, or with magical-enough technology, to step out into the supreme society that created these algorithms. Based on the axiom paper and basically the whole environment and language of the game this universe exists within a computer, and for simplicity sake we'll say that the Earth universe is a computer simulation as well. So, assuming that Athetos doesn't have a thousand year lifespan we're looking at some actual time travel in this. For example, where did the Rusalki come from? Were they originally created on Sudra? Are the kuliltu referenced in the notes the Rusalki or something else? Some of the notes reference people "dreaming" for others, were these people also PatternMinds?Īnywho, I'd be interested in reading any theories people have on the general lore of Axiom Verge! That's my theory about the ending at least, but there's still a lot I'm not clear on regarding the rest of the plot and Sudra's history. At the end of the credits we see Trace lying on the ground on what appears to be Sudran soil. I think the Rusalki actually put Trace in a coma after defeating Athetos and made him dream of returning to Earth, and the Athetos that shoots him is his subconscious trying to wake him up. He gives up his previous research and dedicates himself to trying to get back to Sudra, but Athetos comes and shoots him before he finishes his work. The ending I got, which I assume is the "regular" one if there are others, involved Trace being sent back to Earth and waking up fully healed from his injuries after the lab explosion. I haven't had much luck finding information on whether or not the game has multiple endings, possibly from beating it on Hard or Speedrun mode, or in under four hours.
